Good things happen when Antonio Valencia scores

Manchester United were 3-1 winners at Arsenal earlier this evening to move within five points of Premier League leaders Manchester City ahead of Pep Guardiola’s side being in action on Sunday.

Antonio Valencia opened the scoring after only four minutes when the United right-back intercepted Laurent Koscielny’s cross-field pass in the Arsenal half before playing a one-two with Paul Pogba around the penalty area and then sliding the ball under Petr Čech.

Jesse Lingard made it 2-0 on 11 minutes before Alexandre Lacazette halved the deficit inside four minutes of the second half.  However, Lingard’s second just after the hour would prove to be sufficient for United who held on for a 3-1 victory.

This was despite Paul Pogba’s 74th minute sending off for a stamp on Héctor Bellerín and Arsenal seeing 75% of the possession throughout the game.  The Gunners also fired 33 efforts on goal, forcing 14 saves out of David de Gea who was sublime in the United goal.

Arsenal 1-3 Manchester United today was the 22nd different Premier League game in which Antonio Valencia has scored, and his second at the Emirates Stadium.  What’s most significant about Valencia’s goals is that the Ecuadorian has won 21 of them.

The only team to prevent Antonio Valencia from being on the winning side when he has scored was West Ham, during a 2-2 draw at Upton Park in April 2013 during Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge.

Below is a table of all the Premier League games in which Antonio Valencia has scored, and the final result:
