The 2013-14 Premier League PFA Team of the Year was announced on Sunday night with Chelsea and Liverpool sharing the honours for each having three players selected.

Petr Čech, Gary Cahill and Eden Hazard were the Chelsea players selected, whilst Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suárez represented Liverpool.

There were 5 Englishmen named in the team, including debuts for Luke Shaw (Southampton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea) and Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool). This brings up the tally of English players selected in the PFA Team of the Year to 115 of the 242 selections, as shown in the table below:

Petr Čech was selected as the goalkeeper for the second time. His previous selection was during the 2004-05 season, Chelsea’s first under José Mourinho. He remains the only Czech Republic player to be named in a PFA Team of the Year, whilst is only 1 future selection away from tying the most selections among goalkeepers, with Nigel Martyn, and Edwin van der Sar.

Amazingly, Manchester United and Premier League legend Peter Schmeichel was only selected once during the Premier League era.

This is the first season in which Manchester United have not had a single player named in the PFA Team of the Year. During each one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s 21 seasons in the Premier League with the Red Devils, the 13 times winners of the competition had at least one player selected.

In total, Manchester United have had 32 players selected, totalling 74 selections of the 242 players to have appeared cumulatively during the 22 seasons of the Premier League. This makes them the most successful team by some distance, as detailed below:

Arsenal are next in line but they too did not have a single player selected this season. Chelsea and Liverpool have started to close the gap on the top two.

Luke Shaw and Adam Lallana’s appearances saw Southampton players double their selections from 2 to 4 this season, joining Matt Le Tissier and Wayne Bridge as the only other Saints to have appeared in the PFA Team of the Year during the Premier League era.

No new clubs joined the list this season, which remains at 20 from the 46 teams to have participated in the Premier League:

West Ham have spent the most seasons in the Premier League (18) amongst teams not to have had a single player selected in any PFA Team of the Year.

Eden Hazard and Luis Suárez were the only two players to make the selection for both the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons. Suárez is the only Uruguayan to ever be selected:
