At the half-way stage of the season, 34 goalkeepers have made an appearance in the 2013-14 Premier League.

Clean sheets

2013-14 English Premier League clean sheets

There is a tie at the top between 4 goalkeepers in the race for the Golden Glove; the goalkeeper who keeps the most clean sheets over the course of a season. Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczęsny, Everton’s Tim Howard, Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris and West Ham’s Jussi Jääskeläinen have all shut out opposition on 8 occasions this season.

Jääskeläinen has been the most impressive, playing in the fewest games (17) and for a side that are in the relegation zone heading into the New Year. Tim Howard was sent off 23 minutes into Everton’s Boxing Day fixture with Sunderland, preventing him from keeping a clean sheet in both that match and the following home victory against Southampton on Sunday, due to suspension.

Sunderland’s Keiren Westwood has made the most appearances (10) this season amongst goalkeepers not to have kept a clean sheet. He has since been dropped in favour of former Arsenal shot stopper Vito Mannone who has quietly impressed at the Stadium of Light.

Winner of the Golden Glove for each of the previous 3 Premier League seasons, Joe Hart has some catching up to do over the second half of the season having kept only 4 clean sheets in his 12 appearances. Hart has spent some time on the bench this season, behind Costel Pantilimon, but the England number 1 returned on Boxing Day in a 2-1 win over Liverpool before keeping a clean sheet in the club’s final match of 2013 – a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Minutes per Goal Conceded

Premier League minutes per goal conceded

Of the regular first team goalkeepers in the Premier League, it is Southampton’s Artur Boruc who goes the most minutes in between the sticks between letting goals in. The Polish shot stopper is a considerable distance ahead of Tim Howard in second place, with the Saint conceding one goal every 142 minutes on average, compared to 97 minutes for the Everton first choice.

Wojciech Szczęsny is narrowly behind the American with a goal allowed every 95 minutes, whilst Chelsea’s Petr Čech and Manchester City’s Costel Pantilimon are averaging exactly one goal allowed per game.

Premier League minutes per goal concededAt the other end of the table, Sunderland’s Keiren Westwood has conceded a goal on average every 39 minutes.  That’s more than 2 a game.  Likewise for Fulham’s Maarten Stekelenburg.  His team mate David Stockdale doesn’t fare much better either having conceded 6 at Hull City to end 2013 on a low.

Most saves

2013-14 Premier League most saves

Newly-promoted Cardiff City have not protected their net very well this season – goalkeeper David Marshall leads the league with 77 saves. The Scottish goalkeeper was kept on his toes last time out against Sunderland, whilst having a top performance in a 0-0 draw at Norwich City earlier this season.

John Ruddy who was in goal at the other end in the aforementioned match was also busy that day, and his 69 saves this season is the second-most in the Premier League. Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet is third with 65.

Save percentage

2013-14 Premier League goalkeeper save percentage

As well as conceding the fewest goals per 90 minutes this season, Southampton’s Artur Boruc has the highest shots to save ration in the league too. The goalkeeper who suffered a hand injury just after his side conceded an equaliser to Chelsea on 1 December and has not played since, saved 80% of the shots on target he’d face in 13 Premier League appearances this season.

In 10 appearances since replacing Keiren Westwood, Sunderland’s Vito Mannone has saved 80% of the shots he has faced also. With the rest of his team mates performing so badly, the Italian may need to keep a similar figure between now and the end of the season to help his side pull out of the relegation zone.

Wojciech Szczęsny and Tim Howard are next on the list with 77% and 75% save percentages respectively.

At the opposite end of the table, Paulo Gazzaniga has a woeful 38% save rate in his 6 appearances, despite keeping a clean sheet at Cardiff City on Boxing Day. In actuality, the Bluebirds failed to have a single shot on target during their 3-0 loss.

Keiren Westwood (57%) has the worst save percentage of any goalkeeper to appear in at least half of his club’s matches this season. Perhaps his injury came at a good time for Gus Poyet and Sunderland.

Fulham’s Maarten Stekelenburg has saved just 63% of the shots he has faced this season, and Crystal Palace’s Julián Speroni is next on 65%. The league average is 69%.
