2012/13 Premier League Goalkeeper Stats

The 2012/13 Premier League season reached the half way stage on Boxing Day, with all but 4 teams now playing 19 games. Chelsea and Southampton are one game behind after their fixture was postponed due to the Blues’ commitments in Japan at the World Club Cup earlier this month, whilst Arsenal and West Ham saw their Boxing Day called off because of tube strikes.

There has been little discussion of who the “best goalkeeper” in the Premier League is this season. Manchester City’s Joe Hart has certainly received praises from the English media, whilst league leaders Manchester United’s David de Gea is receiving less stick than he was this time last season for a number of costly errors on his behalf.

Here are the vital statistics for every goalkeeper who has stepped foot in the Premier League this season:

Asmir Begović and the Stoke City defence have kept the most clean sheets in the Premier League so far this season. The Bosnia and Herzegovinian goalkeeper has played every single minute for the Potters this season and conceded a league-low 14 goals in 19 games. Only Manchester United (4) and Wigan Athletic (2) have scored more than 1 goal in a single game against Begović, who has only conceded 4 goals in 9 games at the Britannia Stadium. The solo defensive error made by Stoke’s first choice goalkeeper setup Papiss Cissé to score for Newcastle United in their eventual 2-1 defeat away at Stoke in November.

Manchester City have only conceded 16 goals in the first half of the season. In between the sticks for them every game this season has been Joe Hart. The England number 1 has kept 7 clean sheets so far this season; behind pace to match the 17 he kept last season and 18 before. Hart could be blamed for the goal conceded to Adam Johnson in Manchester City’s 1-0 defeat at Sunderland on Boxing Day; beaten at his near post from 20 yards. Joe Hart went through a spell of keeping 5 clean sheets in 6 games between October and November after starting the season without a clean sheet in his opening 6 games.

Asmir Begović (122) and Joe Hart (107) lead the league in the most minutes between conceding goals; averaging more than a game between conceding goals. The only other goalkeeper in the league to average more than 100 minutes between conceding goals is Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczęsny (101).

Most Saves

Jussi Jääskeläinen has been forced into the most action this season, making a league-high 80 saves. That’s 13 more than second place Ali Al-Habsi. The West Ham shot stopper has managed to keep 6 clean sheets already this season in 18 games. That’s more than both of the other two promoted sides, Reading (2) and Southampton (2), combined.

Save Percentage

Swansea City fans may have been worried at the end of October when Michael Vorm tore his groin at the end of October, but replacement Gerhard Tremmel had proven to be one of the best backups in the league prior to being benched for their recent 1-1 draw with Manchester United when the Dutch star from last season made his return. Tremmel has the best shots-to-save ration in the Premier League; narrowly better than Asmir Begović.

At the other end of the scale, both Artur Boruc and Shay Given have conceded more goals than they have made saves this season. That may go some way to explaining why both goalkeepers have been given just 180 minutes of playing time.
